What are the different types of HDTV televisions? Currently in Canada there are four major types or High Definition televisions on the market. They are direct view, rear projection, front projection and flat panel which can be further divided by the types of technology they employ.

�Angle of View� may be an issue depending upon how and where the store mounts their flat panel plasma tv sets. Some national and regional chains mount up to three sets, one above the other, with the top most being up to 10 feet above eye level. Guess which will appear to produce the best image? The one at eye level of course! Don�t be fooled by this trick. Step back about 25 feet or more and you can level the playing field somewhat in terms of brightness, contrast and black level, but you will still not be able to compare differences in detail.

Buying and HTDV...Personally I don�t like Best Buy or Circuit City; I find their prices very high. Sears has VERY competitive prices. Online prices are normally the best but you�ll pay shipping. So you just have to do the math. Tweeter is normally much more expensive and I�d normally never buy there but they matched Sears and they give great service (e.g. the sales person isn�t a pimply high school kid who doesn�t know anything). Find the best local price and see if Tweeter will match. As a rule, they won�t match any online reseller or �fell out the back of the truck� places.

HD-ready TV...An integrated HDTV or HD-ready TV, as it is more commonly known, comes with an in-built tuner which saves you from spending extra cash on a receiver for HDTV. But if you are planning on a satellite or cable connection then such a tuner may be redundant as you will have to have the receiver that the satellite or cable company provides you. There is also the concern that HDTV being a new technology will go through significant changes and your built-in tuner may not support the upgrades. Things become that much more simpler with a separate receiver.
